The Value of Camp: part II

The Value of Camp

March 1, 2017

I had the honor of leading a retreat this winter with a group of adults from Onesquethaw Reformed Church. It was their 45th ANNUAL church retreat. They gathered to share meals,

discuss stories from the Bible, worship together, tromp around in the snow, and just watch the birds flit to and from the birdfeeders.

The weekend at Camp Fowler reminded me, once again, how important it is to retreat to such a sacred space, away from the routine that consumes so many parts of my other days. Our churches are blest to be able to have access to one of these sacred, "thin," spaces.

Over 1500 people spent a week or more at Camp Fowler in 2016 – and we had plenty of room for more.  Camp Fowler is a 12-month facility, serving people of all ages.  Fowler brought the message of Christian community and caring for creation to over 800 children in summer camps last year.

Fowler can be an important part of your ministry. Time at camp or on retreat:

  • Increases empathy for others and understanding, critical for “loving our neighbors.”
  • Provides opportunities to experience the wonder and awe inherent in creation that is present when we share “for God so loved the world…”
  • Helps children and youth put their faith into practice, which is the first step in following Jesus.
